  • The tour will link up in Goulburn or at the eastern park entrance before heading into the park Those with trailers we will apply some towing skills on a reasonably steep descent into our creekside campsite. We will tour the national park without trailers. Our route tackles the park’s 4WD highlights, including one of the steepest 4WD tracks in NSW and several shallow creek crossings, and we will visit two of several huts in the area. This tour incudes time to discuss and practice some self-recovery and assisted recovery techniques including use of recovery boards, snatch straps, and winch recoveries.

  • Your tour will commence at a link-up point in Goulburn at 10:00am on day 1, or alternatively at 11:30am at the eastern park entrance for those travelling from the north. On day 1, we will travel through dense mountain gum forests with some spectacular views over the NSW Central Tablelands. We will follow the well-maintained tracks to lower altitudes in the south-west where we will see more open forests of scribbly gum and stringy bark. For those with trailers, we will apply some towing skills on a reasonably steep descent into one of the stunning riverside campgrounds where we will establish camp. Drop toilets are available but you will need to bring your own water for drinking and cooking. Your tour guide’s dinner this first night will be a camp oven roast. You are welcome to bring your camp oven, roast of choice, favourite roasting vegetables, and participate in a camp oven cooking class.

On day 2, without trailers, we will tackle some of the park’s 4WD highlights including Retreat Fire Trail, Licking Hole Trail, and Little Bald Hill Trail - one of the steepest 4WD tracks in NSW. We will conduct several shallow creek crossings, have some picturesque stops by the creeks, and visit two of several huts in the area. On this second night, your guide will cook a camp oven damper or two for the group for dessert, and is more than happy to share various damper recipes and show you how to cook them (ingredients provided).

After breakfast on day 3, we will practice some basic self-recovery and assisted recovery techniques including use of recovery boards, snatch straps, and winch recoveries. There is also the opportunity to relax or take a dip in the creek if you wish. After lunch, we will begin the climb out of the valley. The tour will finish at the release point back at the eastern park entrance by 3:00pm.

If your travels see you looking for somewhere nearby to camp, we recommend Bummaroo Ford Campground on the Abercrombie River, 28km south on Abercrombie Rd (bookings required - not included in the tour).

After this tour, you will have the skills and confidence to take your 4WD adventures to the next level. Consider taking one or both of our Victorian High Country tours — Davies Plain or Wonnangatta Valley — or for a tour with your off-road trailer, camper trailer or caravan, have a look at our Corner Country or Madigan Line tours.

★★★★★ Five star rating. We had a wonderful time. Abercrombie National Park was a beautiful park and ideal for giving us the exposure we needed. We are not highly experienced 4WD and learnt way more than we expected. After the weekend we now feel confident in taking our van off road and know its limitations. Both Cam and Fid explained things in easy to understand and practical way and Haydee’s commentary and knowledge of the area and nature was very interesting. The recovery session both theory and practical was invaluable. The weekend has now given us confidence to take the car and van off road and explore our great country a bit further in a safe manner.

★★★★★ Five star rating. The 4x4 tag-a-long tour scheduled for Abercrombie River in June had to be abandoned on the day of departure due to sustained heavy rain closing the National Park. Instead of cancelling the tour, Fid managed to change the location to NSW/VIC High Country within 24hrs to ensure it went ahead. Nothing was too much trouble and Fid was extremely accommodating and agile the entire period. I cannot speak highly enough of his professionalism, knowledge of the tracks we went on and the local country, his knowledge of my vehicle to teach me how to better use the various settings and controls for low-range etc, river crossings and recovery techniques. Fid was very patient, detailed and ensured our needs were first and foremost. I would have no hesitation to recommend going on Fid’s tours and we will be signing up for another one in the future. I cannot fault the long weekend trip and all the organisation and leading of it.
