Recovery Tracks

I highly recommend carrying some basic recovery gear every time you head off road. A long handled spade, a pair of recovery tracks, and a snatch strap with appropriate shackles will get you out of most situations. This video covers the basics of using recovery tracks.

Typically, a pair of tracks used on the rear axle tyres will be adequate, but if you have two pairs you can get the most from all four driving wheels. Maxtrax are top of the line, but they are also expensive. There are cheaper options. I carried a pair of X-Bull recovery tracks for many years and used them several times. They don’t stack as low profile as the Maxtrax but they are effective and cheaper; and there are other similarly effective and less expensive options. The basics of how to use recovery tracks is the same, regardless of the brand.

Our Abercrombie River tour, in particular, incudes instruction on recovery techniques with hands-on recovery practise.

Watch the video for a demo (and watch to the end for some bloopers).
